SweetGredients Gmbh and Co. KG is a joint venture company of Arla Foods Ingredients amba and Nordzucker AG. SweetGredients is the only world wide producer of tagatose. SweetGredients commercialises tagatose through Arla Foods Ingredients in the US, Japan and Korea. We have created a brand for tagatose – we call it Gaio^® tagatose.

Back in 1996, Arla Foods Ingredients bought the world wide exclusive rights to manufacture and commercialise Gaio^® tagatose for use in food and beverages from the American company Spherix. The low calorie functional sweetener, which is produced from lactose, has a production process similiar to sugar. Nordzucker is the second largest sugar manufacturer in Europe. Nordzucker and Arla thus decided to join forces and thereby explointing complementary capabilities.

The new plant is located near Hannover in Germany and is ISO 9001/14001 certified.

Gaio^® tagatose

Gaio^® tagatose is a low calorie functional sweetener. It can be used either for its healthy effects in high doses or as a flavour enhancer in low doses while its high functionality makes it easy to work with.

Gaio^® tagatose creates unique opportunities to develop the healthy foods market and improve the flavour profile of diet products.

Suitable for inclusion in Low Carb Diets such as the Atkins Diet

Although it looks, spoons and tastes like sugar, its metabolism is different. Gaio^® tagatose has no effect on blood sugar levels, i.e. it’s a ”No Impact Carb” which improve quality and glycemic effect of existing and new low carb products.

Commercial availability

Gaio^® tagatose has a FDA notified GRAS status in the US and was launched in the US market in May 2003. Gaio^® tagatose has also been approved in Korea. To support internationalisation, regulatory approvals are under way in major markets worldwide.
